Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1992 shortly after the break-up of the Soviet Union (USSR). Many Kazakh athletes competed from 1952 to 1988 for the Soviet Union, and Kazakh athletes were present at Barcelona and Albertville in 1992 as members of the Unified Team. During this time the most successful Kazakhs have been the gymnast Valery Lyukin (two gold and two silver in 1988), the volleyballer Nina Smoleyeva (two gold and one silver between 1968 and 1976), the sprinter Vladimir Muravyov (two gold in 1980 and 1988) as well as the wrestler Valery Rezantsev, who won twice gold in the Greco-Roman light-heavyweight class 1972 and 1976.
The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan was formed on 3 February 1990 (before the break up from the Soviet Union) and provisionally recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in March 1992. Full recognition followed at the IOC session in Monte Carlo on 24 September 1993. Kazakhstan first competed at the Olympics as an independent nation in 1994 at Lillehammer, where its great cross-country skier Vladimir Smirnov won three medals, one gold and two silvers.
Smirnov has won the most medals for Kazakhstan, with four (and won seven in all, three coming in 1988 for the Soviet Union). Kazakhstan has won eight medals and one gold at the Olympic Winter Games, with half of the medals coming in cross-country skiing.
Kazakhstan made its summer début at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Through 2022, Kazakhstani athletes have won 71 medals and 14 golds at the Summer Games. At the Summer Olympics, the best record belongs to triple jumper Olga Rypakova, who has won three medals, one of each color. Two other athletes have managed to win one gold and another medal: cyclist Aleksandr Vinokurov won silver in 2000 and gold in 2012 (both times in the men’s road race), and boxer Yermakhan Ibraimov won bronze in 1996 and gold in 2000 (in the light-middleweight class in both occasions).
