Australia’s Ariarne Titmus was the defending gold medalist but was probably not the favorite in the 200 free, even though she had broken the world record at the recent Australia Olympic Trials. Her teammate Mollie O’Callaghan was considered slightly stronger at this distance, and Titmus was better at 400 metres. O’Callaghan had been the world record holder, having set it while winning the 2023 World Championship. Another contender was the silver medalist from Tokyo 2020, Siobhán Haughey of Hong Kong, China, who had won the 2024 World Championship earlier in the year.
The three favorites made the final, where Haughey took out the lead for the first three laps. Behind her, Titmus was second for most of the race, while O’Callaghan got off slowly, standing fifth at 50 and 100 metres, although she moved up to third on the final turn.
Nobody could contend with O’Callaghan’s finish on the final lap, splitting 27.98, as Titmus finished in 28.64, the second fastest finish. O’Callaghan took gold with a comfortable margin, over ½-second, as Titmus gave Australia a 1-2 finish. O’Callaghan’s gold was the 100th Olympic swimming medal by Australian women. It was the first 1-2 finish in Olympic swimming for Australia since Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett in the men’s 2004 400 freestyle, and the first by Australian women since Susie O’Neill and Petria Thomas went 1-2 in the 1996 200 butterfly.
Haughey held on for the bronze medal, well ahead of Canadian Mary-Sophie Harvey. This was the third Olympic medal for Haughey, and she would win a fourth, another bronze, two days later in the 100 free. Through 2024, these were the only Olympic swimming medals won for Hong Kong, China. For Harvey, it was another frustrating near-podium finish. She would end the Paris 2024 Olympics with four fourth-place finishes, in this event and all three women’s relays. After finishing fourth at Tokyo 2020 in the 4x200 free relay, this made Harvey perhaps the unluckiest Olympian ever, with five fourth-places in five events and no Olympic medals.
