The three favorites were the defending gold medalist Maggie Mac Neil of Canada; the 2022 World Champion Torri Huske of the United States; and the 2023 World Champion Zhang Yufei of China. Other medal contenders were expected to be Australia’s Emma McKeon, bronze medalist at Tokyo 2020, and the American Gretchen Walsh, who had broken the world record at the recent USA Olympic Trials.

All five favorites made the final, with Walsh leading the semi-finals ahead of Huske and Zhang, as she recorded an Olympic record of 55.38. Walsh also led the final for the first lap, with Zhang in second, followed by Huske. But it was Huske who closed the fastest, splitting 29.98 on the second lap to take the gold medal. Walsh held on for second as the Americans went 1-2, and Zhang took the bronze medal. Mac Neil and McKeon were never really in the medal race, coming home fifth and sixth, respectively.

Huske would leave Paris with five medals in five events, and three gold medals. She also won gold in the women’s and mixed medley relays, and added silvers in the 100 freestyle and the women’s 4x100 free relay. McKeon would finish her career with 14 Olympic medals, adding two more relay medals after this race, an all-time Olympic best for female swimmers, something which Katie Ledecky (USA) would also reach in Paris.
