Format	Qualifying over 3½ laps, or 875 metres. Match races over 3 laps, or 750 metres.

The Netherlands occupied first and second place in the 2020 final in Tokyo, with Harrie Lavreysen beating compatriot Jeffrey Hoogland to take the gold. Lavreysen came to Paris as both the defending Olympic and World Track champion. By comparison, Hoogland had a poor performance at the World Championships, which saw him eliminated early in the sprint competition.

In qualifying, Lavreysen set the best mark with a world record time of 9.088, just three one-thousands ahead of Matthew Richardson (AUS), with Mikhail Yakovlev (ISR) setting the third-best time. From the 30 starters in qualifying, the fastest 24 went through to the first round.

In the round of 32, all the main contenders advanced, including Lavreysen, Richardson, Yakovlev, Hoogland, Jack Carlin (GBR), Hamish Turnbull (GBR), and Nicholas Paul (TTO). The same happened in the next round, apart from Hamish Turnbull, who lost to Azizul Awang (MAS), but he would advance via the repêchage after beating Vasilijus Lendel (LTU). The third round would see both Yakovlev and Paul eliminated, after losing out in their one-on-one sprints and failing to win their respective repêchage race.

For the quarter-finals, Harrie Lavreysen and Matthew Richardson won their first two sprints against Mateusz Rudyk (POL) and Yuta Obara (JPN), respectively, to advance. Hamish Turnbull was paired against Jeffrey Hoogland in the third quarter-final, with the Brit winning the first sprint before Hoogland won the next two. In the fourth quarter-final race, Jack Carlin lost the opening sprint to Kaiya Ota (JPN) before coming back to win the next two sprints to take the final place in the semi-finals.

Both semi-finals were one-sided affairs that saw Lavreysen win two straight sprints against Carlin, and Richardson repeating the feat against Hoogland. In the bronze medal final, Carlin won the opening sprint against Hoogland, before the Dutchman won the second sprint to force a decider. Carlin just held on to pip Hoogland, with the British rider winning his second-successive Olympic bronze in the sprint. The final was more one-sided, with Lavreysen beating Richardson in two straight sprints to retain his Olympic title and win his second gold of the Paris Games.
