FormatSingle-elimination tournament. All fighters losing to the finalists in each pool advance to repêchage tournament for the bronze medal.

The change in weight classes for the Olympics, in which only four weight classes were recognized from the world standard of eight weight classes, made this the most wide-open competition in taekwondo at Sydney. There could be no favorite as none of the 16 competitors had ever placed in any class at an international level previously, with many competitors moving up or down in weight. Ángel Matos of Cuba crushed his first opponent, 9-0, and then easily defeated Roman Livaja of Sweden in the semi-finals. The final was closer, but Matos defeated Germany’s Faissal Ebnoutalib, 3-1. The 2000 gold medal remains Matos’s only major international victory. Ebnoutalib was also world silver medalist in 2003, losing to the 68 kg. gold medalist from Sydney, Steven Lopez.
