Eight teams competed in 1988, with a round-robin that advanced the top four teams to the semi-finals. The United States and Japan advanced to the final, with the US winning the final game and the tournament, 5-3. The United States team had several future Major League players, including Ty Griffin, Robin Ventura, Tino Martinez, Ed Sprague, Jim Abbott, and Ben McDonald. The tournament was weakened by the absence of Cuba, which joined a small boycott of the 1988 Olympics in support of North Korea. Cuba was the world’s greatest amateur team in the 1980s.
