Biography

German flatwater canoeist Mark Zabel won the gold medal with the kayak fours at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He added two silver medals with the fours at Sydney in 2000, and Athens in 2004. At World Championships, he won six gold, four silver, and three bronze medals. Zabel also won two European Championships and also added a silver medal.

After his active career Zabel worked as a coach with the Regional Canoe Association of Saxony-Anhalt until the end of 2014, and from the following year became a canoe coach at the Saxony-Anhalt Regional Olympic Center in Magdeburg.
