Biography

In addition to winning two gold medals in team épée in 1924 and 1932, Georges Tainturier was unofficial World Champion in 1926 and 1923 French champion with the individual épée. A fencing club is named after him in Compiègne.

A dragoons’ officer at the end of World War I, Tainturier was wounded and received the Croix de Guerre and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor. In World War II, Tainturier joined the French Resistance in Compiègne in 1940. He was arrested in 1942, imprisoned in Fresnes and deported to Saarbrücken in Germany. In 1943 after being sentenced to death by the notorious People’s Court as a leading member of the Resistance, Tainturier was executed in Köln (Cologne) by the Gestapo, who decapitated him with an ax.
