Biography

Foil fencer Mathias Gey won two Olympic silver medals at the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympics with the West German team. Individually, he finished sixth and eighth respectively. His greatest moment came in 1987, when he won the individual gold medal at the World Championships, adding to the silver medal he won in 1983. Gey also won two more team golds (1983, 1987), one silver (1989) and two bronze medals (1979, 1981). He also won five national titles in 1982-84, 1986, and 1990.

Gey studied architecture and later had his own office at Tauberbischofsheim. He was nicknamed “foil mathematician” during his fencing career. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
