Biography

Fencer Richard Liebscher participated at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was eliminated in the first round of the individual sabre and in the second round of the team event. He won 14 national titles, six of them individual titles. He was foil champion in 1939 and 1940, and sabre champion in 1942-43 and 1951-52. He was six times the German sabre team champion with TK Hannover. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf in 1956. After his competitive career he acted as a coach in Nürnberg.

By profession, Liebscher became a merchant in the cable industry after World War II. During the war he was a member of the SS. In 1952 he married fellow German fencer Dora Stapelmann.
