Biography

Giancarlo Bergamini had two Olympic appearances (1952, 1956), winning a gold medal in the team foil event in Melbourne, and two silver medals. His three victories in the crucial match against France provided Italy with the victory in 1956. Individually, he placed second to the Frenchman Christian d’Oriola. Bergamini was also very successful in the World Championships, winning three medals of each colour. He became individual foil World Champion in 1958, and with the Italian squad in 1954 and 1955. In 1951, he also won the Italian title. In honor of his sporting achievements, Bergamini was awarded a Gold Medal by the Italian Olympic Committee.
