Biography

Christian d’Oriola was the world’s top foil fencer in the post-war years. In 1947, aged 19, he won his first World Championship, winning it three more times in 1949, 1953 and 1954. He added four gold medals with the French foil team (1947, 1951, 1953 and 1958). At the Olympics, he won both the individual and team gold twice, as well as a silver medal in each event. He was still competing at age 42, when he won the French team épée title in 1970. He later acted as a fencing judge, and vice-president of the French Fencing Federation.
