Biography

Vivian King took up swimming in 1940 and, one year later, became the city of Winnipeg juvenile freestyle champion. She captured her first junior Manitoba title in 1944 and followed that up one year later by capturing six more provincial titles across various disciplines. In 1946 she became junior national champion in the 100 metres freestyle and took her first senior title, in the 100 yards, in 1947. In 1948 she won the Canadian 400 metre freestyle championship and, having broken numerous amateur records over the years, was selected to represent her country at the 1948 London Olympics. There, she was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 400 metres freestyle event and round one of the 4x100 metres freestyle relay, alongside Kay McNamee, Joyce Court, and Irene Strong. She was also entered in the 100 metres freestyle competition, but did not start the event.

King won the Canadian one mile title from 1949 through 1951, but then turned professional prior to the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and made swimming her career for several years. She was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
