Biography

Born in Vancouver in 1957 Steve Hardy spent much of his life in the nearby city of Merritt, British Columbia. A keen swimmer, Hardy earned a swimming scholarship from the Arizona State University, earning a spot on the Canadian national team. In 1974 he swam in the 200 metres backstroke at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, placing sixth in the final. One year later he won silver in both the 4 × 100 and 4 × 200 metres freestyle relays at the Pan American Games in Mexico City. This gained him a spot on the Olympic team for his home Games in Montréal, where he swam in the 100 and 200 metres backstroke. After his swimming career Hardy had a variety of jobs, including working as a bush pilot in Manitoba, a chiropodist, and a carpenter.
