Biography

When he finished second in the 200 metres backstroke at the 1966 European Swimming Championships, Barcelona’s Jaime Monzo became only the second Spaniard after Miguel Torres (1500 metres silver 1962) to win a medal at the Europeans. Monzo first made a name for himself at the 1963 Mediterranean Games, finishing sixth in the 200 back. He took part in the 1965 Universiade and in 1967 added a 100 metres backstroke bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games to his European silver. Monzo broke 12 Spanish backstroke records and won 19 titles (8 individual and 11 relay). He competed in veterans races later in life and also served as a director of the Catalan Swimming Federation.
