Gérard Gropaiz competed in two Olympics for France as a freestyle sprinter. In 1962 he was on the French team that won the European Championship in the 4×100 freestyle relay. Later that year, the same quartet won a race in Thionville, France in 3:42.5, setting a world record for the event. Gropaiz also won a silver medal at the 1962 Europeans with the 4×200 freestyle relay team.
