Biography

Backstroke swimmer Ina Kleber won the silver medal at the 1980 Moskva Summer Games in the 100 metres, which was dominated by East German swimmers. The gold medal went to Rica Reinisch, and the bronze to Petra Riedel. In 1981 and 1983 Kleber won the European Championships, and in 1982, the silver medal at the Worlds, losing to Kristin Otto, all in the 100 backstroke. In 1981 and 1983 she added two more European golds as part of the medley relay squads.

Kleber retired in 1984 as she could not participate at the Los Angeles Olympics due to the Soviet-led boycott. Nevertheless, she set her last 100 metres backstroke world record that year, which was two seconds faster than Theresa Andrews’ time at the 1984 Olympics. Kleber then married breaststroke swimmer, and non-Olympian, Ralf Buttgereit, and also trained as a cosmetician. Later she became a tax clerk at her hometown Greiz.
