Biography

Gabriele Perthes competed at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the 4x100 freestyle relay, representing East Germany. She only swam in the heats and was replaced by Martina Grunert in the final, but this was not mentioned in the 1968 Official Report. The relay won the silver medal closely behind the USA team. Domestically she won East German titles with the 4x100 freestyle and the 4x100 butterfly relay in 1965, with the 4x100 freestyle and the 4x100 medley relay in 1967. Perthes also won her only individual national title over 100 metres in 1967.
