Biography

Martina Grunert captured a silver medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the 4x100 freestyle relay, representing East Germany. She also placed fifth in both the 100 freestyle and the 4x100 medley relay. In 1964 Grunert competed on the mixed German team and came in sixth with the 4x100 freestyle relay, but was disqualified with the 4x100 medley relay in the final. In both, the 100 and 400 freestyles she reached the semifinals.

Grunert was European 100 freestyle champion in 1966 and 200 IM champion in 1970. Domestically she won six East German national titles in the 100 freestyle (1965, 1968), the 200 freestyle (1964-65), and the 400 freestyle (1964-65), adding three more relay titles.
