Biography

East German swimmer Elke Sehmisch burst onto the scene at the 1970 Barcelona Europeans, when she claimed two gold medals in the 400 m freestyle, setting a new European record (4:32.9), and with the 4x100 freestyle relay. She then won a silver medal with the freestyle relay at the 1972 München Games. At the 1973 Belgrade Worlds Sehmisch came in sixth both in the 200 and the 400 m freestyle, and retired soon thereafter. Sehmisch graduated as a psychotherapist, working with the polyclinic at Leipzig, and founded her own practice after re-unification.
