Kanoko Tsutani-Mabuchi began participating in competitive diving when she was at high school, earning a place on the Japanese national team when she was only 16-years-old. Mabuchi competed at the 1954 Asian Games in Manila where she won bronze in both the 3 metre springboard and the 10 metre platform events. Two years later she represented Japan at the 1956 Melbourne Games, finishing eighth in the springboard and 10th in the platform. In 1958 she won her first gold medal at the Asian Games, winning the springboard title in Tokyo.
Kanoko married fellow diver Ryo Mabuchi, with the couple competing at the 1960 Roma Olympics, before she competed at the 1964 Tokyo Games. While she did not win a medal at the Olympics, she continued to have success at the Asian Games, winning another gold in the springboard at the 1970 Games in Bangkok, followed by bronze in Tehran four years later. After retiring Mabuchi became a coach and founded a diving school with her husband. Their daughter Yoshino also represented Japan in diving at both the Olympics and Asian Games.
