Arsens Miskarovs

Arsens Miskarovs from Latvia and Robertas Žulpa from Lithuania were the best Soviet breaststroke swimmers in the early 1980s. Miskarovs made his international début at the 1977 European Championships, where he won silver in the 200 breaststroke and was fifth in the 100 breaststroke. At the 1978 World Championships, Miskarovs again won silver in the 200 breast, but did not advance to the final of the 100 breast. Probably the best competition for Miskarovs was the 1980 Olympics, where he won three medals, silver in the 100 breast and medley relay and bronze in the 200 breaststroke. The last international tournament for Miskarovs was the 1981 European Championships, where he won silver in both breaststrokes. He was also the 1981 Universiade 200 metre breaststroke champion. Domestically, at the Soviet Championships, Miskarovs won three Soviet titles (1977/81 100 breast, 1978 200 breast) and four silver medals (1977/81 200 breast, 1978-79 100 breast). Miskarovs was also a 14-time Latvian SSR champion between 1976-84. After finishing his sporting career, Miskarovs worked as a swimming coach in his native Jelgava, Latvia.
