Biography

Susan Doerr was only 15-years-old when she made the 1960 Olympic team. She competed in her first AAU meet in 1959, representing Vesper Boat Club. Doerr set a world record in the 100 metre butterfly in August 1961, recording 1:08.2 in Philadelphia. She placed second in the 100 fly at the 1960 AAU outdoor meet. Doerr graduated from Abington Friends School in Abington, Pennsylvania in 1963. She attended Chatham College, and then the University of Pennsylvania, but graduated from Beaver College in 1969. After graduation she did Montessori training, with student teaching at the Raven Hill Academy.

Doerr continued to swim after 1960 in an effort to make the 1964 US Olympic team, but illnesses and injuries prevented her from reaching that level. In June 1970 she married Jon Brodsky, an urban planner she met at the University of Pennsylvania, and they moved to New York City. Unfortunately, she died very young.
