Cynthia Potter-McIngvale

As the top-ranked American female diver at the 1972 Olympics, Cynthia Potter was confidently expected to be among the medals but suffered a severe foot injury during a practice session in München and finished 7th on the springboard and only 21st on platform. At the 1975 Pan American Games, as Mrs. Mclngvale, she won bronze in the springboard and at the 1976 Olympics she competed only in the springboard, adding an Olympic bronze.

Potter-McIngvale won silver on springboard at the 1978 World Championships. She also won gold on the springboard at the 1970 Universiade and added a silver in that event on platform. Potter-McIngvale was named World Diver of the Year in 1970, 1971, and 1977.

She was a prodigious performer in the AAU championships, equalling Pat McCormick’s record of 27 titles in 1977 and eventually winning another to break the record. Her AAU titles were as follows: Outdoor – 1m springboard: 1968-76; 3m springboard: 1971-72, 1975-76; platform: 1970-71. Indoor – 1m springboard: 1971, 1973, 1976-77, 1979; 3m springboard: 1969-70, 1972-73, 1977.

Cynthia Potter graduated from Indiana in 1973. She became a diving coach and an outstanding analyst on televised diving competitions.
