Biography

Pokey Watson was yet another U.S. swimming star to come from the Santa Clara SC. After her relay gold medal in 1964 she won three AAU outdoor freestyle titles, but she went to Mexico without a national backstroke title to her credit and still won the Olympic title by a handsome margin. One of her three AAU freestyle championships came in 1966 when she set a world record for 200 m. At the 1967 Pan American Games she won bronze in 100 m freestyle. She later became women’s swim coach at Southern Cal. She married Dr. Alan Richardson, who was a pioneer in sports medicine for swimmers.
