Biography

Tom Dolan was an individual medley specialist who was the world’s greatest all-around swimmer in the later half of the 1990s. He won gold medals in the 400 IM at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, adding a silver medal in the 200 IM at Sydney. Dolan won the 400 IM at both the 1994 and 1998 World Championships and won both individual medleys at the 1995 Pan Pacific Championships, after winning silver in the 400 IM at the 1993 Pan Pacs. Dolan set two world records in the 400 IM, at the 1994 Worlds and the 2000 Olympics.

Dolan swam in college at the University of Michigan. He won six individual NCAA titles, winning the 500 yd freestyle, the 1,650 yd freestyle, and the 400 yard IM, all in 1995-96. He also helped Michigan win the 4x200 yd freestyle relay in 1994-96.

Dolan was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. He later ran the Tom Dolan Swim School in Northern Virginia, helping teach all ages of swimmers.
