Biography

John Hargis was a butterfly and backstroke specialist who won a gold medal in the medley relay at the 1996 Olympic Games, swimming butterfly in the heats of the event. Hargis also won a silver medal in the medley relay at the 1998 World Championships.

Hargis attended Auburn University. He later became a swim coach, starting as an assistant to the athletic director at the University of Arkansas and then became an assistant coach at UNLV. He later coached at Penn State, Arkansas, and Auburn, before being named head coach at the University of Pittsburgh in 2016.
