Biography

In addition to being a politician and businessman Henrique Melman also had a short career playing water polo for the Brazilian national team in the 1950s. Melman graduated with a degree in engineering and went on to work in the business sector. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics he was the goalkeeper for the Brazilian water polo team but only played in their 6–2 victory against Portugal. Brazil finished the Olympics tying for 13th with three other teams out of the 21 nations that participated. After his brief sporting career Melman turned to politics and became a member of the Democratic Labour Party (Partido Democrático Trabalhista, PDT). Between 2001 and 2008 he served as the mayor of Arraial do Cabo for two terms.
