Biography

Bill Kooistra attended Northwestern University and played water polo for the Illinois Athletic Club. He helped Illinois AC win AAU outdoor titles in 1955 and 1958 and indoor titles in 1954-56, 1959-60, and 1962. In addition to his two Olympic appearances (1952, 1956), Kooistra won a silver medal at the 1955 Pan American Games and a gold medal at the 1959 Pan American Games. Kooistra served in the US Navy on submarines, and worked for many years with the Chicago Fire Department. He was inducted into the Roseland-Pullman Sports Hall of Fame for the Chicago area, and in 1977 was inducted into the US Water Polo Hall of Fame.
