Biography

Sargis Sargsyan was an Armenian tennis player who played professionally from 1995 to 2006. Sargsyan achieved a career-best singles ranking of #38 in the world in January 2004, and a doubles ranking of #33 in the world in August 2004. He played on Armenia’s Davis Cup team from 1996 to 2006.

Sargsyan won four singles titles on the ATP Challenger circuit with his victory coming at the 1996 Zagreb Open when he beat Marcos Górriz in straight sets. Later the same year Sargsyan won two ATP Challenger doubles titles, the first in Monterrey, Mexico, and the second in Austin, Texas, both with American Michael Sell as his partner. On the ATP Tour Sargsyan only won one singles title in his career when he beat Brett Steven at the 1997 Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island. Sargsyan also won two ATP doubles titles in 2003, the first at the Washington Open with Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and the second at the Romanian Open with Karsten Braasch.

At Grand Slams Sargsyan reached the fourth round in the singles at the 2003 Australian Open and the 2004 US Open. His best performance in the doubles came at the 2004 French Open when he and Karsten Braasch reached the quarter-finals. Sargsyan competed in the singles at three consecutive Olympic Games; 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney, and 2004 Athína, only getting to the second round in Atlanta.
