Ernst Krogius graduated from law school in 1889. Four years later, he became manager of his father’s shipping agency, the Lars Krogius & Co. When it was transformed into a limited company, he became its CEO in 1920, a position he held until 1951. From 1896, he also acted as CEO of Ångfartygs Ab Swedish Lloyd, a shipping company in Gothenburg. He held various other positions in important Finnish companies and was a member of the city council.
Ernst Krogius was one of the founders of the Finnish Olympic Committee and served as its President from 1919-29. His primary sport was yachting, as he won a bronze medal as helmsman of the yacht “Heatherbell” in the 12-metre class at the 1912 Olympics, served as President of the Finnish Yachting Association (1906-17), and helped to found the International Yacht Racing Union in 1907. Krogius was also President of the Finnish Gymnastic Federation. He was co-opted onto IOC in March 1920 and served until August 1948, when he resigned, only to be named one of the first three IOC Honorary Members. At the Paris Olympics in 1924, Krogius was the leader of the Finnish team. In his youth he also tried cycling and tennis.
In 1891 he married Elin Korsman. She died aged 34 just one year after their daughter was born. He re-married in 1939 his second wife Karin Margarethe Crone-Petersén.
