Biography

Edwin Carr, Jr. competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, running the 200, 400, and both relays. He was the son of Edwin “Slip” Carr, who was an Australian sprinter at the 1924 Olympics. Edwin, Jr. won two gold medals at the 1950 British Empire (Commonwealth) Games, winning the 400 and running on the Australian championship 4x400 relay. Carr was Australian 440 yd champion in 1949-50 and 1952.

Carr competed in the Olympics while doing his medical studies at Sydney University. He became a general surgeon, also doing fellowships in England and Scotland and was a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. Carr was a visiting honorary surgeon at Blacktown Hospital from 1965-84. For many years he operated at the Ingleburn Army Base in Sydney, and also did a tour of duty in 1970 in Vietnam, working at the Australian field hospital in Vũng Tàu. Carr was an honorary medical officer for Athletics New South Wales for decades.
