Biography

Shooting guard Kazys Petkevičius began playing basketball with Žalgiris Kaunas in 1945, playing there until 1953. In 1954 he was with SKIF Leningrad, before finishing his career with Burevestnik Leningrad from 1955-58. With Žalgiris, Petkevičius won Soviet titles in 1947 and 1951. He also won silvers at the Soviet championships in 1949 and 1952 and bronze in 1953. He was on the Soviet national team from 1947-56 and he won Olympic silvers in 1952 and 1956, European titles in 1947 and 1953, and a bronze at the 1955 Europeans. After finishing his sporting career, Petkevičius worked as a basketball coach. He was head coach of the Lithuanian SSR national team from 1959-62 and head coach of Žalgiris Kaunas from 1960-62. He later worked for many years as a children’s coach in Kaunas. In the 2000s he was the coach at the Arvydas Sabonis Basketball School and was the coach of the Žalgiris Kaunas B team.
