Biography

At Mexico City in 1968, East German sprinter Harald Eggers reached the final of the 4x100 relay after his team set two new European records in the heats (38.93) and semifinal (38.72). Nevertheless they lost the record to France in the final (38.43), in which the East German team placed fifth. Eggers also took part in the 1966 European Championships and the European Cup in 1965, 1967, and 1970 (winning the title with the relay). Domestically he won titles with the 4x100 relay team in 1965-67 and 1971, at 100 metres in 1966-67, over 200 metres in 1967, and added four more titles at unusual distances, as well as several second and third places. In 1966 he became the first East German sprinter under 10.3 for 100 metres. He was educated as a mechanic.
