In addition to being a decent track sprinter Dutch sportsman Jan de Vries also played football. In 1920 De Vries became the national champion in the 100 metres to earn himself a place at the Antwerpen Olympics. At the Games he ran in the 100 metres and was part of the quartet in the 4 × 100 metres relay. He was also named in the Dutch football squad but did not play in any matches. He returned to the Olympics four years later for the 1924 Paris Games where he won bronze in the 4 × 100 metres relay along with compatriots Jaap Boot, Harry Broos, and Rinus van den Berge. The Dutch team ran 42.0 seconds in their opening heat to equal the then world record, which was later bettered by the Americans in the semi-finals. De Vries was selected to compete at a third Olympics, once again in the relay, but the Dutch team did not start at their home Games in Amsterdam.
Personal Bests: 100 – 10.8 (1920); 200 – unknown.
