Biography

Dutch track sprinter Rinus van den Berge represented AV Haarlem, winning multiple national titles with the club. In 1924 van den Berge was named as part of the Dutch Olympic track and field squad for the Paris Games. At the Olympics he ran in both the 100 and 200 metres, reaching the quarter-finals in each race. He was also part of the 4 × 100 metres relay quartet that won bronze, with the Dutch team equalling the then world record in the heats when they ran 42.0 seconds. The following year van den Berge won his first of nine Dutch titles with victory in the 200 metres. He then went on to do the double in the 100 and 200 metres at the national championships on four occasions (1926–27, 1929, 1932). At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics he ran in the 100, 200, and 400 metres, and was part of the relay team for the 4 × 400 metres.

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.6 (1925); 200 – 21.3 (1930); 400 – 50.0 (1927).
