Affectionately known locally as “Pipi”, Jorge Vizcarrondo was born in New York but moved to Puerto Rico when just two months old. He took up athletics as a 15-year-old college student, excelling as a sprinter, and was soon selected for the 1966 Central American and Caribbean Games but, because Vizcarrondo was not old enough, could not compete. However, he went to the Pan American Games in Winnipeg the following year.
Vizcarrondo competed in the first of two Olympics at Mexico City in 1968 and that year ran a personal best 10.2 for the 100. Two years later at the Central American and Caribbean Games he achieved a career highlight by winning a bronze medal with the Puerto Rican 4x100 relay squad.
Vizcarrondo went to his second Pan American Games in 1971 before going to the München (Munich) Olympics the following year. Having represented the Catholic University of Puerto Rico at the first World University Games (Summer Universiade) in 1973, Vizcarrondo rounded off his major international career with a second Central American and Caribbean Games appearance in 1974.
Vizcarrondo obtained a degree in Natural Sciences in 1975, and after retiring from competitive athletics became a physical education teacher. In 2012 he was elected to the Rio Pedras Hall of Fame.
Personal Best: 100 – 10.2 (1968).
