Biography

In addition to being a champion of Yugoslavia in track and field athletics Jovan Mikić was also a prominent member of the Partisan resistance movement in the Second World War. At the Yugoslav national championships Mikić won back-to-back titles in the triple jump in 1933 and 1934. At the Balkan Games he won four silver medals (1932–34, 1936) before winning gold in 1937. He also was the Balkan champion in the high jump in 1935, and won silver in the decathlon in 1939. Mikić was selected to represent Yugoslavia at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he finished 21st in the triple jump. By 1941 he had moved to the city of Novi Sad where he was now a part of the resistance movement in the region of Bačka. The area was under Hungarian occupation and Mikić was shot dead by a solider at the train station in Subotica
