At the 1988 Olympic Winter Games short-track speed skating was a demonstration event and Maria Rosa Candido placed third in the 3,000 metres and helped her Italian team win the 3,000 metre relay. She won bronze in the relay at the 1987 Montréal World Championships and another bronze at the 1991 Sydney Worlds. At the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics Candido was part of the team that placed seventh in the relay.
In October 1993, while she was in training for the next Olympics, she died in a car accident at only 26-years-old, along with 15-year-old athlete, Lori Vecelio Segato, when a heavy trunk fell off a truck and landed on her car.
