Track athlete Steffi Graf was Austrian champion in 400 metres (1997-2000, 2003), 800 metres (1994-98), 1500 metres (1993-94), 4×400 metres relay (1998), and 3×800 metres relay (1997-98). At the 1998 European Championships she won the 800 metres bronze medal, and at the 2000 Sydney Olympics was the surprise winner of the 800 metres silver. In 2001 and 2003, Graf added two more silver medals at the World Indoor Championships and another silver at the 2001 Worlds.
Graf was named Austrian Sportswoman of the Year in 2000 and 2001, and in 2001 was also voted European Athlete of the Year after becoming world champion runner-up. Her duels with Maria Mutola were legendary. From 2005-08, Graf was married to professional golfer Niki Zitny. Since her retirement in 2009, she has worked as a co-commentator for the Austrian broadcaster ORF. In 2010, Graf was retrospectively banned for two years due to her involvement in the Austrian blood doping scandal.
