Biography

From 1968 to 1971 Hans Nerell was a member of Sweden’s Davis Cup tennis team, which saw him play in the infamous match against Rhodesia in 1968. The match was scheduled to be played in the Swedish town of Båstad, but a protest around the political situation in Rhodesia, later known as the Båstad riots, forced the tie to be played in France. Sweden won the rescheduled match 4–1, with Nerell contributing to the Swedish victory.

Also in 1968 Nerell competed in the singles and doubles at the Mexico City Olympics, with tennis played as a demonstration sport. He paired with the Soviet player Teimuraz K’ak’ulia in the latter, but lost in the first round to the Mexican duo of Rafael Osuna and Vicente Zarazúa. The following year Nerell had his best performances at a Grand Slam when he reached the second round in the singles and doubles at the French Open.
