Biography

Diana Munz was a distance freestyler who swam at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. She won medals in all three Olympic events she entered, with gold in the 2000 4x200 freestyle relay, silver in the 2000 400 metre freestyle, and bronze in the 2004 800 metre freestyle, earning a full set of Olympic medals.

Munz’s greatest international meet was the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships where she won four gold medals, in the 400, 800, and 1,500 freestyles, and the 4x200 free relay. At the 1997 Pan Pacs she had taken home three medals, with silver in the 1,500 freestyle, and bronze medals in the 400 and 800 freestyles.

Munz was a six-time medalist at the World Championships, competing there in 1998, 2001, and 2003. She won gold in the 2003 4x200 free relay, silvers in the 800 freestyle in 1998, 2001, and 2003; and bronze medals in the 2001 1,500 metre freestyle and the 2003 400 metre freestyle.

Munz came from an athletic family as her father, Robert Munz, was a world-class figure skater who finished fifth in ice dance at the 1964 World Championships. As Diana DePetro, Munz later became director of swimming at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
