Biography

Sergey Savelyev made his international début at the 1976 Olympic Games where he won gold in the 30 km, bronze in the relay and was 21st over 50 km. At the 1978 World Championships he won the 30 km race, was fourth in the relay and 23rd at 50 km. Savelyev made his final international appearance at the 1980 Olympic Games, where he was fifth in the 50 km. Domestically he won eight Soviet titles – in 1977 at 15 km, in 1976 in the 30 km, in 1973, 1976-77 over 50 km, and in 1977-79 in the relay. After his sporting career Savelyev worked from 1981-89 as a head coach of the CSKA Moskva cross-country skiing team and later was a private security guard.
