Description

The Brunei National Olympic Council was formed in 1984 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in that year. After sending an official as an observer to both Seoul (1988) and Barcelona (1992), Brunei (also known as Brunei Darussalam) first competed at the 1996 Olympic Games, where they were represented by a single competitor in the skeet shooting event. To date, Brunei has been represented by eleven Olympic athletes – one in 1996, two in 2000, one in 2004, three in 2012, three in 2016, and two in 2020 (seven in track & field athletics, with one badminton player, one shooter, and two swimmers). Brunei did not compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has never been represented at the Winter Olympic Games.

The skeet shooter Jefri Bolkiah, Prince Abdul Hakeem is still the only Olympian from Brunei to compete in two Olympic Games: in 2000 he placed 45th out of 49 in men’s skeet shooting, the best performance among Bruneian Olympians. London 2012 saw the first ever female competitor from Brunei when Maziah Mahusin set a national record in the women’s 400 metres.
