Djibouti (DJI)

Djibouti (known as French Somaliland up to 1967 and as French Territory of the Afars and the Issas from 1967 to 1977) became independent from France on 27 June 1977. The Djibouti National Olympic Committee was founded in 1983 and recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 26 July 1984 at the IOC session in Los Angeles enabled them to make their Olympic début at the Los Angeles Games that year. Since then they have competed at every Summer Olympics, save for 2004, but have not yet participated in the Olympic Winter Games. In 2004, Djibouti entered athletes in track & field athletics and tennis, but none of them competed, for unknown reasons.

Their appearances have been highlighted by their excellent marathon runners, one of whom (Ahmed Salah) won a bronze medal in 1988 at Seoul. Djiboutians have competed in track & field athletics, judo, sailing, swimming, and table tennis.
