The program was the now standard five events for men and women – downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom, and combined. There was a slight change in the format of the combined, which changed to placements decided on total time, rather than by a point system, a format that favored the slalom specialists. The speed events (downhill and super-G) were held at Kvitfjell, a ski resort in Ringebu, about 50 km. north of Lillehammer. The technical events (giant slalom and slalom) were contested at Hafjell, a ski resort in Øyer, 18 km. north of Lillehammer, directly between Ringeby and Lillehammer. The women’s downhill was originally scheduled for Hafjell. But the women skiers protested that the course was too flat and easy, and the Lillehammer organizers responded and moved the women’s downhill to Kvitfjell.
