Format	Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall (win by fall-0.0; win by superior decision-0.0; win by decision-1.0; draw-2.0; loss by decision-3.0; loss by superior decision-4.0; loss by fall-4.0). Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler, but a wrestler could not be eliminated after a victory. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

Soviet Soslan Andiyev was a heavy favorite in this class, having won the 1973 and 1975 World Championships and the 1974-75 Europeans. He dominated the class, winning six matches easily. Silver went to Hungarian József Balla, who lost in the first round to Andiyev by disqualification. Andiyev would win the 1977-78 Worlds and defended his Olympic gold medal in Moskva in 1980, with Balla again taking the silver. Because of Andiyev, Balla would win six medals at the World and Europeans, but his only title came in winning the 1983 European Championship.
