New Zealand had won the gold medal at Tokyo 2020, behind Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler-Williams, but the Kiwis had a new boat and never contended in Paris.
The Dutch pair of Ymkje Clevering and Veronique Meester were likely favorites. They had won the 2023 World Championships in the women’s pair, and were silver medalists behind Prendergast and Gowler-Williams at the 2022 World Championships. Until more recently, Clevering and Meester competed in the four, winning European Championship gold medals in that event in 2019, 2020, and 2021. They also won a silver medal at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in the four.
Australia was also considered a medal contender, with Jess Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre. They had won the 2023 Luzern Regatta and won a silver medal in the pair at the 2023 World Championships. In 2019, Morrison and McIntyre won silver at the World Championships in the pair, and added another silver medal in the eight. The Australian pair competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, finishing seventh in the pair by winning the B Final. However, they also rowed the four, helping Australia win the gold medal in that event.
Clevering / Meester were dominant in the final, winning by over four seconds. Behind them, Morrison / McIntyre were in second for much of the race, but were passed in the final 500 metres by the Romanian pair of Ioana Vrînceanu and Roxana Anghel. That was the podium.
Vrînceanu and Anghel also rowed the eights at Paris 2024 and won a gold medal in that event. They had both competed at Tokyo 2020, but won no medals, Vrînceanu in the eights and Anghel in the four.
