Fidel LaBarba, a 19-year-old high school student from the USA, was unchallenged in winning the gold medal. A fine defensive boxer, he used his elusiveness to dominate his opponents, including Briton James McKenzie in the final. La Barba’s American team-mate Ray Fee took the bronze medal when his Italian opponent withdrew in protest at the standard of officiating.

LaBarba started a professional career a few months later and went on to win the American and World Flyweight titles before his 21st birthday. Sadly, his career ended when an infection caused the loss of an eye. He went on to become a sports journalist and was eventually elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame.
