The co-favorites were the Russian pair of Tetiana Volosozhar and Maksim Trankov, who were 2013 World Champions, and the German pair of Aljona Sawtchenko and Robin Szolkowy, 2008-09 and 2011-12 World Champions, runners-up in 2013, and the 2010 Olympic bronze medalists. Also considered were the 2010 silver medalists from China, Pang Qing and Tong Jian, who had been 2010 World Champions. The German and Chinese teams had to overcome the home crowd and history, as a Russian or Soviet pair had won this title at every Olympics since 1964, except for 2010.
The short program went as expected with Volosozhar and Trankov leading comfortably over Sawtchenko and Szolkowy, with Pang and Tong in fourth place, behind the relatively unknown Russian team of Kseniya Stolbova and Fyodor Klimov, who had been recent runners-up at the European Championships but whose only semi-major title had been winning the 2013 Winter Universiade.
In the free skate Volosozhar and Trankov won easily, winning the gold medal by a huge margin over their teammates, Stolbova and Klimov, who moved up to the silver medal by placing second in the free skate. Pang and Tong placed third in the free skate but could not move onto the podium as Sawtchenko and Szolkowy repeated their bronze medal.
Volosozhar and Trankov had already won gold medals in the team trophy competition in Sochi, so they became the first figure skaters to win two gold medals at one Winter Olympics. They also became the first pair to win an Olympic gold medal in front of their home crowd since Germans Maxi Herber and Ernst Baier at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936. The two medals for Russia marked the 9th time in the last 13 Winter Olympics that Russian or Soviet pairs had won two Olympic medals in the event.
